Generic Optivar is also known as Azelastine hydrochloride. The medicine is used to treat itchness of the eyes that is caused due to allergy. It is an antihistamine eye drop. This medicine functions by preventing the release of histamine and also reduces the symptoms of allergic reaction in the eyes. It should not be used to treat any other allergy such as allergy due to contact lens, etc.

Generic Optivar or Azelastine belong to the class of medicine known as antihistamine. It is used to treat and also provide relieve from itching of eyes that is caused due to allergy. The medicine works by inhibiting the histamine receptor in the body. It is used to treat itchy or watery eyes. Not only this, it is also used to heal itching eyes that is caused as a result of conjunctivitis.

In other words, generic Optivar is used to treat allergic conjunctivitis. Being antihistamine, it functions by blocking natural substance such as histamine, etc. Histamine is responsible for causing allergy in the body.  This medicine should not be used for treating redness and irritation that the patient might feel after wearing contact lens.

Generic Optivar contains Azelastine hydrochloride as active ingredient that has a molecular weight of 418.37. This appears as white in color and is crystalline powder. It is soluble in methanol, water, propylene, ethanol, octanol, glycerine, etc. Chemically, azelastine hydrochloride is designated as is (±)-1-(2H)-phthalazinone,4-[(4-chlorophenyl) methyl]-2-(hexahydro-1-methyl-1H-azepin-4-yl). Generic Optivar contains various inactive ingredients such as disodium edetate dihydrate, hypromellose, sorbitol solution, sodium hydroxide and water for injection..

Before using generic Optivar, the patient should wash their hand. Do not touch the dip of the dropper else it might contaminate the medicine. Contact lens, if used, should be removed by the patient. This medicine should be used twice in day. The patient should not wear contact lens if the eyes are red after using the medicine. 

The patient suffers from side effect after the use of generic Optivar which includes:

  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Bitter taste in mouth
  • Trouble in breathing
  • Pain in eye
  • Dizziness
  • Rash
  • Swelling of throat, face, etc.
  • Trouble in breathing
  • Prior using generic Optivar, the patient should tell to the doctor if they are allergic to this medicine or have any other allergy.
  • There are various inactive ingredients present in the medicines that might lead to allergic reaction in some of the users. 
  • Before using this medicine, the patient should tell to the doctor if they have any medical record of any problem.
  • The drug makes the patient feel dizzy. Therefore, work that requires alertness such as driving vehicle, operating machine, etc. should be avoided by the users.
  • The medicine might pass to the breast milk of breast feeding patient which in turn can cause harm to the infant. Therefore, proper care should be taken by the user.
