What Is Plan B? Why Do Women Use It?

Plan B is a wonderful emergency contraceptive pill for women who willing to prevent their pregnancy after unprotected intimacy or failure of other forms of contraceptives or birth control measures.  This medicine helps a woman to enjoy her intimate life without fear of getting pregnant, even if she carries out unguarded lovemaking sessions. Plan B is also known as a morning-after pill containing a generic drug called Levonorgestrel.

How does Plan B Act?

Levonorgestrel shows its remedial effect by creating hindrance in ovulation process and blocks the release of an egg from the ovary. It causes a certain modification in the cervical mucus creating difficulty for sperm to reach an egg for the process of fertilization. It also makes some changes in the uterine that prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg in the mother's womb.

What is the method of intake of Plan B?

Plan B is commercially available in an oral tablet dosage form containing 1.5mg of Levonorgestrel. One should gulp down a single pill of Plan B orally as early as possible within 72 hours after undefended sensual intercourse or a known or assumed contraceptive failure. A woman should remember that take this medicine as soon as possible after unguarded intimacy.

Contradictory conditions for the use of Plan B:

  • Known or suspected pregnancy
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Breastfeeding condition
  • Allergic to generic Levonorgestrel
  • Diabetes

Adverse effects of Plan B:

Plan B is a very safe and effective drug, but sometimes its use may cause some common side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, light-headedness, lethargy, breast pain or tenderness, headache, and variation in the menstrual periods.

Things to be kept in mind while using Plan B:
  • Do not recommend Plan B to any woman under 17 years of age.

Possible drug interactions of Plan B:

Some drugs show drug interaction with generic Levonorgestrel, so do not use any of these following drugs along with Plan B such as Rifampin, Mobarbital, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Butabarbital, Mephobarbital, Secobarbital, Phenobarbital, St. John’s Wort, Nelfinavir, Nevirapine, and Griseofulvin.

Generic Name - Levonorgestrel

One pill of Plan B should be taken orally within 72 hours of unprotected sex and the second tablet should be taken after 12 hours of first dose. This medicine can be used any time during the menstrual cycle.

In case, the patient vomits after one hour of taking Plan B tablet, then she should consult the doctor.

Plan B medicine should not be given to anyone with age less than 18 years. It contains two tablets and both are identical and contain equal dose of Levonorgestrel. So the patient need not worry as to which tablet should be taken first.

Generic Name - Levonorgestrel

The patient might suffer from pain in abdomen, dizziness,diarrhoea, tiredness, changes in the vaginal bleeding, headache, etc. In that case, she should consult her doctor.

Some patients might suffer from pain in lower abdomen also. Sometime, the inactive ingredient present in the tablet causes allergy to the patients.

Few patients might get rash, itching, swelling in face, throat, severe dizziness, problem in breathing, etc.

Generic Name - Levonorgestrel

Plan B is not useful in preventing the pregnancy that has already begun so the pregnant women should not take this generic drug. Plan B should not be used as a regular method for birth control.

Plan B contains Levonorgestrel that might pass into the breast milk and harm the nursing baby. So the patient should not take this pill without consulting to the doctor.
