Generic Name - Levonorgestrel

Plan B is an emergency contraceptive pill that contains active ingredient, Levonorgestrel 0.75 mg that is a totally synthetic progestogen (female hormone). It helps in preventing ovulation that is, release of an egg from an ovary, by changing the cervical mucus and uterine lining and makes it hard for the sperm to reach to the uterus and therefore the fertilized egg do not get attached to the uterus.

Plan B is also known as Moring-after pill and is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or when birth control forms fails. It contains various inactive ingredients such as colloidal silicon dioxide, gelatin, potato starch and lactose monohydrate and corn starch and talc and magnesium stearate.

Plan B does not provide protection against any sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea, HIV, chlamydia, etc. These medicines should not be used as birth control method regularly.

Generic Name - Levonorgestrel

One pill of Plan B should be taken orally within 72 hours of unprotected sex and the second tablet should be taken after 12 hours of first dose. This medicine can be used any time during the menstrual cycle.

In case, the patient vomits after one hour of taking Plan B tablet, then she should consult the doctor.

Plan B medicine should not be given to anyone with age less than 18 years. It contains two tablets and both are identical and contain equal dose of Levonorgestrel. So the patient need not worry as to which tablet should be taken first.

The patient might suffer from pain in abdomen, dizziness,diarrhoea, tiredness, changes in the vaginal bleeding, headache, etc. In that case, she should consult her doctor.
