Yasmin is a combination of two compounds namely, Drospirenone and ethinylestradiol, that prevents release of an egg from ovary, a process known as ovulation. In addition to this, it also changes the cervical & uterine lining and makes the sperm difficult to attach to the uterus and in turn prevent the attachment of fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Yasmin contraceptive pill and also used for treating moderate acne in female of age group 14 years and the menstrual cycle have started. Yasmin contain 28 film-coated tablets; 21 tablets are yellow in colour and contain 3 mg of drospirenone & 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol and 7 inert white tablets.

The inactive ingredients present in yellow tablets include lactose monohydrate NF, corn starch NF, pregelatinized starch NF, povidone 25000 NF, magnesium stearate NF, hypromellose USP, macrogol 6000 NF, titanium dioxide USP, talc USP, and ferric oxide pigment, yellow NF whereas the white tablets containlactose monohydrate NF, corn starch NF, povidone 25000 NF, magnesium stearate NF, hypromellose USP, talc USP, and titanium dioxide USP.

Drospirenone is a synthetic presentational compound, has a molecular weight of 366.5 and a molecular formula of C24H30O3. On the other hand, ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic estrogenic compound havingmolecular weight of 296.4 and a molecular formula of C20H24O2.

Yasmin should be taken in the same dose as suggested by the doctor. It should not be taken in larger or smaller amount than recommended to the patient.

The patient should take Yasmin on the first day of the period. One tablet should be taken every day. If the patient does not take this pill every day, there is a chance that she might become pregnant.

The patient might suffer from breakthrough bleeding during the first 3 months and in case the bleeding is very heavy, the patient should consult the doctor.

If the patient is having any allergic reaction with any of the ingredients, then she should consult the doctor.

The patients might get serious side effect after the intake of Yasmin medicine such as sudden numbness, weakness, severe headache, confusion, problem with vision, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, sweating.

Some patients suffer from cough, rapid breathing, coughing up blood, pain in upper stomach, itching, loss of appetite, dark coloured urine, jaundice, swelling in ankle, depression.

Yasmin can also lead to less serious side effect such as mild nausea, breast tenderness, darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth and changein appetite. Some patient might have problem with contact lenses, vaginal itching and changes in the menstrual cycle.

Yasmin should not be taken if the patient is already pregnant as it might cause birth defects.

If the patients have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, blood clotting disorder, unusual vaginal bleeding, severe migraine headache, jaundice, breast cancer, liver disease, etc. then Yasmin should not be taken.

If the patient is taking any medicine for hepatitis C, antibiotics, etc. she should tell to the doctor as Yasmin will be less effective in its presence.
