Dostinex is a generic medicine that is known by different trade name in the market such as Cabergoline, Cabaser, etc. Dostinex is an ergot derivative and is a potent dopamine receptor agonist on D2 receptors. Dostinex is used as a first line agent in the management of prolactinomas because of higher affinity for D2 receptor sites.
Cabergolineis a white powder that is soluble in ethanol, chloroform and N, N dimethylformaide. It is slightly soluble in 0.1N hydrochloric acid, very less soluble in n-hexane and insoluble in water.
Dostinex was approved on December 23, 1996 by FDA. Dostinex got approval for generic in late 2005 following US patent expiration. Dostinex is used to treat hyperprolactinemia and mono therapy of Parkinson’s disease in the early phase.
In addition to this, Dostinex is also used as adjunctive therapy of prolactin-producing pituitary gland tumor, as combination therapy together with levodopa & decarboxylase inhibitor in progressive- phase of Parkinson’s disease.
Dostinex is used in treating uterine fibroid and also lower Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) level and also causes the regression of ACTH producing pituitary adenomas.

The dose for Dostinex depends on the type of disease that the patient is suffering. For treatment of Parkinson’s disease, when monotherapy is used, initially 0.5 mg of Dostinex is given daily. The regular maintenance dose is 2 to 4 mg daily. In contrast, when Dostinex is used as combination therapy, then 2 to 6 mg of Dostinex is given daily.
For the treatment of tumors of pituitary gland and other hyperprolactinemic condition, the patient is given 0.5 mg of Dostinex initially per week and if required, this dose is increased to 4.5 mg per week.
The side effects of Dostinex varies with the dose that the patient is given. Some patient’s shows side effect while others not for the same medicine.
The patients might show sign of nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth and dyspepsia. Dostinex also leads to psychiatric disturbances and also affects central nervous system. Few users of Dostinex might get sleep disturbance, insomnia, depression, hallucination and dyskinesia.
Dostinex also affects the cardiovascular system where is causes hypotension, peripheral edema, non-specific edema,arrhythmias, palpitation and angina pectoris.
