Valproic acid is used only or with additional medicine for the treatment of definite types of seizures. This medicine is also used to treat mania (episodes of frenzied, abnormally excited mood) in people with bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other strange moods). It is also used to stop migraine headaches, but not to reduce headaches that have already started. Valproic acid is available as a capsule, an extended-release (long-acting) tablet, a delayed-release (slow to begin working) tablet, a sprinkle capsule (capsule that contains small beads of medication that can be sprinkled on food), and a syrup (liquid) to take by mouth. Valproic acid is in a group of medicines called anticonvulsants. It works by raising the amount of a definite usual essence in the brain. It is also used to handle and manage certain types of seizures. It works on the central nervous system (CNS) in the brain to decrease the number and harshness of seizures.
