Generic Lexapro or Escitalopram is a powerful medicine that is used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

Other medicine of the same class includes:

  • Fluoxetine
  • Paroxetine
  • Sertraline

Generic Lexapro or Escitalopram functions by restoring the balance of natural substance called neurotransmitter such as serotonin, present in the brain.  Neurotransmitters are made and released by the nerves and then they travel to the other nerve and get attached to the receptor on the nerves. All neurotransmitter does not bind to the receptors. Rather some are taken up by the nerves that produce it. This process is known as “reuptake”.  Depression is the result of the imbalance of the neurotransmitter.

Generic Lexapro works by preventing the reuptake of one neurotransmitter known as serotoin. This results in more serotonin in the brain to attach to the receptor. FDA has approved this medicine in August 2002.

The active ingredient present in it is escitalopram oxalate that is chemically known as S-(+)-1-[3-(dimethyl-amino)propyl]-1-(p-fluorophenyl)-5-phthalancarbonitrile oxalate. It has a molecular weight of 414.40 and C20H21FN2O • C2H2O4 is its molecular formula. It appears as white to slightly yellowish powder like and is soluble in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide.

The various inactive ingredients present in it include talc, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose/colloidal silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate. The film coating of the medicine contains hypromellose, titanium dioxide and polyethylene glycol.
